"the wall street journal" reports the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation was removed from the case after it was discovered he sent a shirtless picture of himself to jill kelly. the agent who knew kelly sent the pictures before the investigation began. he was later removed from the investigation because supervisors were concerned the agent may have become obsessed with the case. >> and there's more. a team of fbi agents searching paula broadwell's home yesterday. eight to ten agents brought cardboard boxes and searched both levels of the house. the fbi confirmed agents were there but wouldn't say what they were looking for. >> obviously, a lot going on here. we have two reports. chris lawrence of the pentagon and brianna keeler in our washington bureau.

lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it? >> so far, from what we've heard from defense officials, soledad, john allen has denied any wrongdoing in this matter. what is the matter at hand is on sunday the fbi notified the pentagon that they had 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails, which contained inappropriate contact between general john allen, and jill kelley. yesterday, secretary panetta asked that john kelley -- or john allen's nomination to be the head of nato be pulled back and put on hold while the inspector general starts to dig through all of these pages to find out exactly what happened. here's how it all connects. general john allen was stationed in tampa when he was at u.s. central command. so was general david petraeus. jill kelley worked as sort of a social liaison with a lot of the commanders there. in fact, she's been -- won awards for her work with some of the military f

the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other communications, many with kelley over a two-year period. >>

these days. take a look at some of the spending that he found buried inside the pentagon's budget. coburn said he found spending by the pentagon and other departments of funding studies of babies interacting with robots, the air force spending money on studying the color of dinosaur feathers and darpa spends $6 million on a study of storytelling techniques and the brain. coburn said he or she identified about $67.9 billion worth of spending that he thinks over ten years can be easily cut out of the pentagon budget. and i want to leave you with one of the other items that he found here. this was kind of a whopper to a lot of us here in the office. he found that the pentagon had financed a seminar discussion and the topic of that discussion was, did jesus die for the cling-ones, too? and it was a discussion of whether or not -- what the implications are for christianity if extraterrestrial life is discovered? those are your taxpayer dollars at work. >> eamon jarvis, thank you very much. >>> sure, obama care may guarantee you health insurance. but what good is it if you can't get any health

by the pentagon. all of the efforts or many of the efforts to pursue terrorists around the world are done now on the intelligence side as much or more than than on the pentagon side. general petraeus brought to this job a great deal of strength because of, obviously, his long career on the pentagon side in dealing with regular, non-intelligence parts of the defense establishment but also knowing a fair amount about intelligence as well. so this is a work in progress. general petraeus is say strong figure with a lot of influence. pretty tough for anyone who rises to senior levels was able to move things and continue to move things aalong in a way that most people think it needs to go. to have a robust intelligence community in the post-9/11 world. we'll have to say who the president comes up with. as we saw in the benghazi situation, but it wasn't the first time, there was some tension between petraeus and the cia and the intelligence community and the state department and the pentagon. the kind of things you normally see, but not the kind of thing that this president tolerates. we've seen he
